What is systemic design?
Systemic design is an attempt to fuse together methods from design thinking and systems thinking. Design thinking is a process that is creative, iterative, solution-based and human-centred. It has been advocated as a powerful initiator of social innovation by incorporating consumer insights, needs and motivations. Despite the high hopes presented by design thinking, it reaches limits when faced with complex problems, and often lacks the deep understanding required for future orientated change.
Within this challenge, systems thinking has been promoted as a pioneering discipline for providing holistic ways of looking at the world and discussing the entanglement of phenomena. Regardless of its merit, the systems movement has failed to advance the human crisis of climate change, leading some to call for the integration of systems thinking with the practical techniques of design thinking. The result is a fusion of holistic methods to explore complexity and practical methods that support transition.
